Gongole Slams Gov’t Over Rape Allegations: ‘Selective Justice Weakens Rule of Law

By: Kabina Kabbah

MONROVIA – Renowned human rights lawyer, Cllr. Taiwan Gongole, has strongly criticized the Liberian government for failing to take action against Deputy Youth and Sports Minister McGill, who faces grave allegations of rape.

Speaking amid mounting public outrage, Cllr. Gongole argued that McGill should already be in police custody.

He warned that the government’s reluctance to act reflects a dangerous pattern of selective justice and threatens the integrity of the rule of law.

Citing Article 11(c) of the Liberian Constitution, which guarantees equal protection under the law, Cllr. Gongole emphasized that the government has a duty to uphold this principle regardless of an official’s status.

“The failure to act undermines the government’s arrest agenda and weakens public confidence in the justice system,” Cllr. Gongole declared.

He added that McGill, who was appointed to protect and empower Liberian youth, has instead become “a threat to their safety and well-being.”

In a direct appeal to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Cllr. Gongole urged swift intervention, calling for McGill’s immediate arrest. He stressed that decisive action is necessary not only to ensure justice for the alleged victim but also to restore credibility to Liberia’s justice system.

Cllr. Gongole further appealed to civil society organizations and law enforcement to stand firm in guaranteeing justice without delay.

His call reflects the wider demand for accountability and transparency in handling cases of sexual violence.

As the government remains silent, public pressure continues to build, raising serious questions about its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and upholding the rule of law in Liberia.
