Liberia Hosts Maiden WAFU Zone A U-17 Girls Tournament at SKD

By Perry B. Zordyu

PAYNESVILLE – Liberia is hosting the maiden edition of the WAFU Zone A U-17 Girls Tournament, aimed at showcasing emerging female football talent across West Africa.

The inaugural competition officially kicks off today, Wednesday, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, with Sierra Leone taking on Senegal at 4:00 p.m.

Out of WAFU Zone A’s nine member nations, only three—Sierra Leone, Senegal, and host nation Liberia—have confirmed their participation.

The teams will compete in a round-robin format, playing each other twice, with the side finishing at the top of the points table crowned champions.

Liberia’s head coach, Sekou Manubah, has named a 20-player squad that moved into camp on Monday.

The young Lone Star girls have been preparing rigorously, focusing on high-intensity training, quick ball movement, finishing drills, and tactical organization, as they aim to make a strong showing on home soil.

The tournament promises an exciting display of the region’s best young female talent, with Liberia hoping to capitalize on home advantage to claim the inaugural title.
