STAND Criticizes Liberia Council of Churches Over Call to Cancel December 17 Protest

By: Sampson W Weah – sampsonwweah@7gmail.com

CONGO TOWN – The Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) has sharply criticized the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) for urging the cancellation of the group’s planned December 17 protest, accusing the religious body of abandoning its moral duty to the Liberian people.

In a statement issued Tuesday, STAND said the LCC has shifted from being the “conscience of the nation” to what it described as a protector of political power.

The organization claimed the Council now prioritizes its relationship with the Executive over the struggles and concerns of ordinary citizens.

STAND further accused the LCC of losing its moral authority when it celebrated the controversial removal of the Speaker and remained silent amid rising corruption, economic hardship, and allegations of police brutality across the country.

The group rejected the Council’s argument that protests should not take place because of the upcoming Christmas season, calling it an excuse that uses religion to shield those in authority.

Reaffirming its stance, STAND maintained that the December 17 protest is lawful, constitutional, and will proceed as planned despite what it called “compromised moral voices.”

“The Council has fallen,” STAND declared. “On December 17, the people will rise.”
