Nurse Anesthetists Sound Alarm Over Low Pay, Policy Gaps in Liberia

NATIONAL NEWS

CAPITOL HILL – The Liberia Association of Nurse Anesthetists (LANA) has raised urgent concerns over inadequate compensation and the absence of a clear policy framework for anesthesia providers across the country.

The concerns come as the Association marks nearly three decades of commitment to safe anesthesia delivery and quality surgical care in Liberia.

Despite successful partnerships with the government and international organizations, including Mercy Ships—which has supported equipment distribution and advanced training—LANA says it is alarmed by the government’s failure to adopt a previously proposed salary structure.

According to the Association, the delay continues to affect critical benefits such as structured salary progression and rural service incentives for fewer than 125 licensed anesthesia providers nationwide.

Currently, providers earn between US$415 and US$600 per month, a level LANA describes as far below sustainable living standards.

The shortage of anesthesia personnel has also forced many surgical patients to be referred to Monrovia, raising concerns about patient safety and equitable access to care.

LANA is therefore calling for immediate government action to establish minimum salary benchmarks and support the creation of accredited training institutions.

The Association says equitable compensation is essential not only to address the financial challenges faced by anesthesia providers but also to strengthen patient safety and expand surgical access throughout Liberia’s healthcare system.

Prince A. Toe, representing the House of Representatives, received the petition and assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed promptly.

He further encouraged the workers to return to their duties while the House reviews their request.
