Boakai’s Growing Influence? Expelled CDC Leaders Credit Unity Government for Progress

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA – The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has announced the immediate expulsion of three senior members, accusing them of disloyalty and collaboration with the ruling Unity Party.

Those expelled are Senator Zoe E. Pennue, Representative Samson Weah of Sinoe County District Two, and the party’s 2023 campaign spokesman, Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala.

In a press statement issued Monday, February 9, 2026, the CDC said the decision followed nearly 18 months of conduct it considers damaging to the party and in violation of several provisions of its constitution, including Sections 38, 39, 41(A), 42, 44, 45, 46, and 47.

The party cited Section 47 of its constitution, which states that membership may cease through withdrawal, transfer of loyalty to another political party, expulsion endorsed by the National Executive Committee, or death.

According to the CDC, the expelled officials used public platforms to denigrate the party and openly aligned themselves with the Unity Party–led government, actions it said contradict the CDC’s values and principles of good governance.

The statement further warned the public against conducting business with the individuals in the name of the CDC, stressing that they are no longer affiliated with the party.

However, the expelled members are said to believe that President Joseph Boakai’s administration is delivering more development to the Southeastern region, from which they hail, compared to the previous CDC-led government of former President George Weah.

They reportedly argue that the past administration did not adequately address the needs of the people in that part of the country.

Political observers say the development could benefit the ruling Unity Party, which has historically struggled to secure strong electoral support in the Southeast.

Analysts believe the influence of the expelled figures in the region may help shift political support toward the Unity Party ahead of future elections.

Despite the defections, the CDC reaffirmed its commitment to what it described as people-centered governance and vowed to reorganize as it prepares to challenge the Unity Party in the 2029 elections.
