MONROVIA – The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has announced that the government will commence an annual recruitment of 600 personnel into the AFL, beginning this year.
The program, set to run from 2026 to 2029, will add a total of 2,400 troops to the Liberian military.
Speaking during the 69th Armed Forces Day celebration at the Barclay Training Center, President Boakai emphasized that the recruitment initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure the AFL remains a disciplined, professional, and future-ready force.

“The Armed Forces of Liberia have endured trials and emerged as a disciplined, professional institution. Yet, we must prepare for the future. In this regard, our government has taken action to address challenges such as high attrition rates and the natural aging of elements of our force. Beginning in 2026, the annual recruitment of six hundred personnel into the AFL will commence and run through 2029,” he said.
The President noted that this recruitment drive is not just about numbers; it is about shaping a force that reflects the diversity, resilience, and aspirations of the Liberian people.
“This is a deliberate strategy to ensure that the AFL remains youthful, dynamic, and capable of responding to both traditional and emerging security threats,” he added.
Military Personnel Welfare Under Spotlight
President Boakai also highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.
He pledged to prioritize the renovation and restoration of barracks in Bomi and Maryland counties, complementing recent renovations in Margibi and Nimba counties.
“This initiative is meant to decongest living quarters and provide decent housing for our soldiers. It must be seen as a collective national duty,” the President said, stressing that the project is aimed at maintaining soldiers’ readiness and well-being.
The Ministries of National Defense, State, and Public Works have been tasked with assessing these facilities to begin renovation and construction work.
“These projects are more than infrastructure; they are investments in dignity, guaranteeing that our soldiers and their families live in safe, decent, and supportive environments. A soldier who is dignified at home will defend our nation abroad,” President Boakai said.
He further thanked ECOWAS for its contribution toward constructing a mental health facility at the 14 Military Hospital, noting that it represents a new frontier in caring for the psychological as well as physical well-being of troops.
“By addressing mental health, we affirm that resilience is not only physical but also psychological. A strong military is prepared in mind as much as in body,” he said.
Promoting Inclusivity and Female Participation
President Boakai also emphasized the importance of female participation in the AFL, recognizing the unique perspectives, skills, and strengths women bring to the institution.
“The future of the Armed Forces must be inclusive. We are proud of the ELSIE Foundation’s support to increase female representation within the AFL. This is transformative, not merely symbolic. Women enrich the Institution and ensure the AFL reflects the full potential of our nation,” the President said.
He highlighted that the Defense Minister is now the first female to hold the position, reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for women to serve, lead, and excel in every aspect of military life.
Regional Security Cooperation
The President underscored that Liberia’s security is closely linked to the stability of West Africa. He extended appreciation to Major General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, and to the Capstone Program delegation from the U.S. National Defense University, for their continued support and cooperation.
“Peace in one nation strengthens peace in the region. Together, we stand as partners against instability, terrorism, and transnational threats.”
“Liberia remains committed to regional cooperation, knowing that our collective strength is greater than the sum of our individual efforts,” President Boakai said.
Call for National Support to the AFL
Concluding his remarks, President Boakai called on all Liberians to recognize and support the AFL.
“As we celebrate Armed Forces Day, let us remember that the men and women in uniform are not only defenders of our borders; they are defenders of our future and our sovereignty. They embody discipline, sacrifice, and patriotism. Liberia salutes you.”
“Your courage inspires us, your sacrifice strengthens us, and your service unites us. Let us continue to support the AFL with the resources, respect, and recognition they deserve; for in their strength lies our peace.”
