Liberia Shows Leadership in West African Security, Backs Benin for AU PSC

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia has reaffirmed its strong commitment to regional peace and security by demonstrating leadership and solidarity within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the wider international community.

In response to evolving security dynamics in the Sahel subregion, particularly the growing threat of terrorism, Liberia made a principled decision to step aside to allow the Republic of Benin to contest and assume the relevant seat on the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council.

The decision reflects Liberia’s ongoing commitment to collaboration and leadership in regional peace and security initiatives, especially during its current tenure on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Benin’s geographic proximity to the Sahel, and its direct exposure to the security challenges in the subregion, were key factors considered by Liberia in making the decision.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, following consultations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Security Advisor, and Liberia’s delegation in Addis Ababa, emphasized the importance of ensuring Benin’s participation in the AU Peace and Security Council.

Liberia will seek to contest the next available seat in accordance with established regional processes.

ECOWAS has welcomed Liberia’s approach, describing it as a strategic and constructive move that underscores the country’s unwavering dedication to peace, security, and regional cooperation.

While Liberia did not participate in today’s vote, the government affirmed its continued engagement in collective efforts to address security threats across West Africa and reiterated its responsibilities at the United Nations Security Council.
