Rivercess Senator Seeks Senate Intervention Over Suspension of National ID Cards Issuance

NATIONAL NEWS

CAPITOL HLL – Wellington Geevon, Senator of River Cess County, has called on the Liberian Senate to invite the leadership of the National Identification Registry (NIR) to explain the ongoing suspension of the issuance of National Citizens Identification Cards.

In a communication addressed to Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Senator Geevon requested that the Executive Director of the NIR and members of its Board of Directors appear before Senate Plenary to clarify the circumstances surrounding the halt in the issuance of the identification cards.

According to Senator Geevon, the continued suspension of the national ID card program is creating serious challenges for Liberian citizens who depend on the document to conduct routine business and official transactions.

“The unexplained suspension of the issuance of National Citizens Identification Cards is causing serious inconvenience to Liberians and undermining normal business and administrative transactions,” the River Cess lawmaker stated in his communication.

He described the matter as a national concern and urged his colleagues in the Senate—often referred to as the “House of Elders”—to give the issue urgent attention.

The National Identification Registry is responsible for issuing biometric identification cards to Liberian citizens and residents. The system is intended to facilitate access to banking services, government programs, and other essential activities that require official identification.

However, the reported suspension of the process has left many citizens unable to complete basic transactions, raising concerns among members of the public and lawmakers alike.

If the Senate Plenary approves the request, officials of the National Identification Registry will be expected to appear before the Legislature to explain the cause of the suspension and outline steps being taken to resume the issuance of the national identification cards.
