Bility Applauds Senate for County Audits, Urges Them to Audit Themselves

NATIONAL NEWS

CAPITOL HILL – Musa Hassan Bility, Representative for District 7 in Nimba County, has praised the Liberian Senate for its recent directive to the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to conduct nationwide audits of County Administrations and County Councils.

He described the move as “commendable and necessary” for strengthening accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.

In a statement, Hon. Bility noted that ensuring county administrations properly account for public funds is essential to building trust between government institutions and Liberians.

He acknowledged the Senate’s initiative as a significant step toward improving governance and financial discipline across the country.

However, the lawmaker also called on the Senate to take the initiative further. “True accountability must begin at home,” Hon. Bility said, urging the Senate to submit its own financial and administrative operations to a similar audit by the GAC.

He emphasized that leadership by example sends the most powerful message to the public, showing that transparency and integrity are principles applied at every level of governance.

According to Rep. Bility, such a bold move would mark a turning point in Liberia’s governance culture and inspire citizens’ confidence in their leaders.

“Accountability is not only something we demand from others, but something we practice ourselves,” the statement reads. “Extending the same standard of scrutiny to the Senate would be a historic achievement for our democracy.”

Hon. Bility concluded by reiterating support for the nationwide county audits while urging the Senate to deepen this effort by exemplifying the very standards it expects from other public institutions.
