AU Commends Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone for Peaceful Resolution of Border Tensions

AFRICAN UNION – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf Ali, has welcomed the outcome of a high-level Tripartite Summit held on March 16, 2026, in Conakry, aimed at strengthening border cooperation and promoting regional stability.

The summit, convened by the Presidents of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, focused on addressing ongoing border tensions within the framework of the Mano River Union.

In a statement, the AU Chairperson commended the three governments for choosing dialogue and diplomacy over conflict, describing their approach as a demonstration of commitment to African Union principles.

He noted that the peaceful engagement aligns with key AU frameworks, including the Constitutive Act of the African Union and the AU Non-Aggression and Common Defence Pact.

Ali praised the spirit of cooperation, good neighborliness, and shared responsibility exhibited by the three nations, stating that their actions underscore the value of “African solutions to African problems.”

He added that the agreement represents a significant milestone in reinforcing peaceful dispute resolution among AU Member States.

The AU also acknowledged the role of the Economic Community of West African States and other international partners for their contributions in facilitating the process.

According to the statement, the peaceful settlement sets a strong example for conflict prevention and resolution across the continent, while laying a foundation for sustained peace, security, and development within the Mano River region.

The Chairperson further applauded the decision by the three countries to convene a Mano River Union Summit within a month, aimed at revitalizing the regional bloc and strengthening continuous dialogue on peace, security, and development.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting the governments and peoples of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in consolidating the gains made and advancing long-term regional stability.
