The nomination, announced Monday by the Executive Mansion, places a long-serving insider at the helm of Liberia’s elections body at a time when public trust and administrative stability remain critical to the country’s democratic process.

Mr. Weedor, who served as an NEC Commissioner from 2004 to 2020, is widely regarded as a key figure in the Commission’s operational structure over the years. During his tenure, he oversaw several core departments, including human resources, finance, and procurement, and at one point acted as Co-Chairman—roles that positioned him at the center of electoral management and reform efforts.

His experience extends beyond Liberia, having participated in electoral missions and observation assignments across Africa, including engagements in Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria. He has also contributed to election assessment initiatives under regional bodies such as the African Union and the ECOWAS.

The President’s decision to nominate Mr. Weedor is being viewed as a strategic attempt to maintain continuity within the NEC, particularly following the departure of Madam Browne-Lansanah, whose tenure saw both commendation and criticism over the handling of recent electoral processes.

Pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate, President Boakai has directed Mr. Weedor to serve in an acting capacity until lawmakers return from recess. The move ensures that the Commission remains fully functional during the transition period.

Mr. Weedor holds a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the School for International Training in Vermont, United States, and a Bachelor’s degree in General Forestry from the University of Liberia.

President Boakai expressed confidence in his nominee’s “competence, integrity, and professionalism,” emphasizing that the NEC under Mr. Weedor’s leadership is expected to uphold transparency, independence, and credibility—principles seen as essential to strengthening Liberia’s democratic institutions.
