MONROVIA – The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has raised alarm over what it describes as a gradual erosion of democratic standards, particularly freedom of expression, under the administration of Joseph Boakai.

In a statement titled “No Rescue Without Freedom,” the union said many Liberians including journalists, students and activists are increasingly concerned about their ability to speak freely without fear of intimidation or reprisals.
It stressed that democracy is best measured by how dissent is treated.
Key incidents highlighted
The PUL pointed to a series of developments it described as troubling. These include the removal of House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and the continued detention of Justin Oldpa Yeazehn, also known as Prophet Key, by the Supreme Court of Liberia for criminal contempt.
It also referenced the violent suppression of student protests at the University of Liberia on April 14, 2026, and the expulsion of Representative Yekeh Kolubah, which it described as “extra-legal.”
Fears over legislative rollbacks
The union warned of what it called “sinister efforts” to undermine transparency and press freedom, including concerns around the Freedom of Information framework and attempts to amend the Kamara Abdullah Kamara Act of Press Freedom.
According to the PUL, such actions risk reversing hard-won gains, particularly the repeal of criminal libel, sedition and related laws.
Call for rule of law and restraint
The PUL emphasised that freedom of expression is a constitutional right protected under Article 15, and cautioned that any actions outside due process could weaken public trust in the rule of law.
It also criticised the use of force against peaceful demonstrators, noting that citizens must be allowed to assemble and express grievances without fear.
Appeal to government
The union called on the government to uphold freedom of expression, respect judicial independence, and ensure that all actions are grounded in due process.
It further urged authorities to end intimidation of dissenting voices and avoid reintroducing criminal penalties for speech.
“Liberia’s democratic journey has been shaped by struggle and sacrifice,” the statement said. “There can be no rescue without freedom.”
The statement was signed by PUL President Julius Kanubah, who reaffirmed the union’s commitment to defending press freedom and safeguarding Liberia’s democracy.
