According to the Commission, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday, May 17, 2026, in the Chief Compound Community in Gbarnga City, where reports indicate that two 33-kilovolt distribution lines were severed following a loud explosion believed to have originated from a transformer station in the area.

The incident, first reported by the Investigative Bong Eye Newspaper and several journalists, allegedly triggered a fire outbreak that resulted in the deaths of two children and caused significant damage to homes belonging to residents within the affected community.

In a statement issued Monday, LERC described the incident as “deeply concerning” and confirmed that it has commenced a formal investigation in line with regulatory procedures to determine the exact cause of the disaster and establish accountability.

The Commission said it has instructed the management of Jungle Energy Power to urgently submit a detailed incident report within the prescribed regulatory timeframe. The report is expected to outline the probable cause of the explosion, the extent of damages, actions already taken to address the situation, and measures intended to prevent future occurrences.

Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Claude J. Katta, extended condolences to the bereaved families and residents affected by the tragedy.

“The Commission views matters affecting public safety with the highest level of concern and remains committed to ensuring full accountability, strict regulatory compliance, and the protection of electricity consumers and the public across Liberia,” Katta said.

LERC further warned electricity operators across the country to strictly comply with established safety, operational, and maintenance standards, emphasizing that utility companies have a legal obligation to take preventive measures to protect lives and property.

The Commission assured the public that findings from the ongoing investigation will be made public in the interest of transparency, accountability, and restoring public confidence in Liberia’s electricity sector.
