The award was presented by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during World No Tobacco Day 2026 celebrations in recognition of Dr. Kpoto’s leadership and commitment to advancing tobacco control policies and protecting public health in Liberia.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Health Minister, Hon. Julie Fatormah Wiah, Chairperson of the House Committee on Health, described the recognition as a reflection of Liberia’s collective efforts to safeguard the health of its citizens.

“This honor reflects Liberia’s collective commitment to safeguarding the health and future of our citizens,” Hon. Wiah said. “We are proud that the world is recognizing the work being done to protect communities from the harmful effects of tobacco.”

Dr. Tedros praised Liberia for demonstrating leadership in addressing tobacco-related health challenges, noting that strong leadership and sustained commitment remain critical in reducing tobacco use worldwide.

“Liberia’s efforts represent meaningful progress toward protecting lives and promoting healthier societies,” he stated.

The recognition comes as Liberia continues to strengthen implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), amid growing concerns about the health and economic consequences of tobacco use.

According to the WHO, tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths globally, making tobacco control a major public health priority.

The WHO also encouraged other countries to follow Liberia’s example by prioritizing tobacco control strategies aimed at reducing tobacco-related illnesses and deaths.

Liberia has in recent years intensified efforts to strengthen anti-smoking laws, expand public awareness campaigns, and improve health protections against tobacco-related diseases.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is an international treaty designed to reduce the global spread of tobacco and minimize its health, economic, and environmental impacts.

Officials say Liberia’s implementation of the treaty demonstrates the country’s commitment to improving public health and protecting the well-being of its citizens.

Hon. Wiah reaffirmed Liberia’s determination to continue fighting tobacco use and promoting healthier communities across the country.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to protect our citizens from the harmful effects of tobacco and promote a healthier Liberia for all,” she said, adding that the recognition represents “a victory not only for the Health Ministry but for the Liberian people as a whole.”
