Concerns Grow Over Alleged Expanding Illegal Mining in River Gee County

LOCAL NEWS

RIVERGEE COUNTY – A Liberia Excellent News Network (LENN) investigation has uncovered huge illegal mining activities in Tienpo Gmomaken, amid reports that the operations are spreading toward Katuken in District #1.

Information gathered from various parts of River Gee County suggests that the mining is taking place outside the country’s legal framework, with much of the activity occurring in remote areas that are difficult to access and monitor.

Sources indicate that the operations are concentrated along rivers and within forest communities, raising concerns about environmental damage and weak enforcement.

Residents in affected areas report that some farmlands have been disturbed, while sections of nearby rivers and creeks appear to have changed from their natural state. There are also growing concerns about possible water pollution and its long-term impact on communities.

Particular attention is now being drawn to the reported expansion of the activities toward Katuken, suggesting that the mining is not only continuing but increasing in scale.

Observers say this could heighten the risk of further environmental degradation, including damage to land and water sources, as well as potential threats to livelihoods in surrounding communities.

The situation also highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing mining regulations, especially in remote regions where government presence is limited.

At the national level, the development adds to broader concerns about the management of Liberia’s natural resources and the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy, along with other relevant institutions, is expected to review the situation and determine appropriate action.

For local communities, the implications could be significant, particularly for farming, access to clean water, and overall stability if the issue remains unaddressed.

LENN says it will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more verified information emerges from River Gee County.
