BASSA COUNTY – Concerns over workers’ living conditions at the Liberia Agricultural Company (LAC) have prompted renewed discussions about employee welfare, with the company reaffirming its long-standing commitment to improving housing, education, healthcare, and infrastructure across its concession.

The conversation intensified after images of aging workers’ housing facilities in some LAC communities circulated on social media, generating public interest and calls for greater attention to the welfare of plantation employees and their families.
In response, LAC has acknowledged the concerns raised and emphasized that the company remains committed to addressing infrastructure challenges while building on decades of investment aimed at improving the lives of workers and surrounding communities.
A review of developments across the concession by Liberia Excellent News Network and other local and national media institutions shows that while some older residential facilities require rehabilitation, significant investments have already been made in community infrastructure, including bridges, water systems, schools, solar lighting, and other social programs designed to improve living conditions.
The company says it views workers and host communities as critical partners in its operations and has renewed its pledge to continue investing in projects that promote safety, dignity, and sustainable development.
A Bridge That Changed Daily Life
Among the recent projects highlighted by residents is a newly constructed footbridge in Joecy Gargar town, a community that previously faced serious transportation challenges during the rainy season.
Before the bridge was built, residents said crossing the river was often dangerous, forcing many people, including schoolchildren, to rely on unsafe wooden structures or attempt to cross through flooded waters.
Philip G. G. Gargar, a resident of Joecy Gargar and son of the town’s founder, recalled the difficulties residents faced before the intervention.
“There was no safe crossing. During the rainy season, people were often stranded, and children could not get to school,” Gargar said.
According to him, the situation changed after LAC representatives visited the community to assess problems affecting residents, including a damaged hand pump and the unsafe river crossing.
“They promised to help us, and not long afterward engineers came and built this bridge. It has made a real difference in our lives,” he added.
Residents said the bridge has improved mobility, strengthened access between communities, reduced school interruptions, and provided a safer route for families during the rainy season.
The community also praised LAC for repairing a damaged hand pump and installing solar-powered lighting, describing the projects as practical improvements that have enhanced daily life.
Residents Want More Done
Despite appreciating the improvements made so far, residents and workers say more remains to be done, particularly in addressing aging housing facilities and expanding infrastructure across the concession.
Some employees have called for continued rehabilitation of workers’ quarters, improved road networks, better drainage systems, expanded electricity access, and additional community development initiatives.
Residents acknowledged that several communities have benefited from LAC-supported projects but stressed that additional investments are needed to ensure all workers and surrounding communities experience improved living standards.
For many employees, the discussion is not only about buildings but also about creating a safe and dignified environment where workers and their families can live, raise children, and contribute effectively to the company’s growth.
Company Acknowledges Housing Concerns
LAC management has welcomed the public conversation and acknowledged that some older residential facilities require attention due to years of use.
The company said it is actively working on a phased approach to rehabilitate housing units and improve other facilities throughout the concession as part of its broader employee welfare strategy.
Management emphasized that investments in workers’ welfare remain a key priority, pointing to ongoing initiatives in housing, education, healthcare, water access, and community infrastructure.
LAC officials highlighted recent projects, including bridges, water systems, and solar-powered lighting, as examples of the company’s continued efforts to improve conditions for employees and neighboring communities.
The company also said additional rehabilitation and development projects are planned as part of its long-term commitment to workers and communities.
On education, LAC continues to operate schools that provide learning opportunities for thousands of children within its concession.
Head of Schools Abel Dennis said the company currently provides education for 7,592 students, including 348 children from neighboring communities who benefit from free access to LAC-operated schools.
“Every child who walks into one of our classrooms deserves a safe, welcoming place to learn, and that is what we work to provide every day,” Dennis said.
LAC General Manager Naveen Madan reaffirmed the company’s commitment to improving the welfare of employees and communities connected to the plantation.
“The families who work on this plantation and the communities around it are part of our long-term commitment. We recognize that responsibility and will continue investing in these areas,” Madan said.

As discussions continue, workers and residents say they welcome LAC’s renewed commitment and hope ongoing investments will accelerate improvements in housing, infrastructure, and essential services.
