The turbine, which sustained damage in 2021, had reduced the plant’s electricity output by approximately 22 megawatts, affecting overall power generation.
Following extensive rehabilitation works carried out by engineers and technical experts, the unit has now been fully restored, enabling the hydropower facility to return to its full installed capacity of 88 megawatts.
President Boakai made the remarks on Friday, June 5, 2026, during activities marking the commissioning of the 20-megawatt Solar Photovoltaic Plant at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Complex.
He said the restoration of the turbine represents a major achievement for Liberia’s energy sector and reinforces ongoing efforts to provide reliable and affordable electricity to homes, businesses, and public institutions across the country.
According to the President, the successful rehabilitation reflects the government’s commitment to improving critical infrastructure and ensuring that strategic national assets are properly maintained to meet the growing needs of the Liberian people. He emphasized that a stable and dependable energy supply remains essential for economic growth, investment, job creation, and the overall development of the country.
The restoration of the damaged turbine comes at a time when Liberia is working to expand access to electricity and strengthen energy security.
With the hydropower plant now operating at full capacity and the addition of the newly commissioned 20-megawatt solar facility, the country is expected to significantly increase its power generation capabilities while reducing dependence on costly alternatives.
Energy experts view the combination of hydropower and solar generation as a key step toward diversifying Liberia’s renewable energy portfolio and building a more resilient national electricity system.
The expanded generation capacity is also expected to support efforts by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to improve service delivery and extend electricity access to more communities.
President Boakai praised the Liberia Electricity Corporation, development partners, engineers, and technicians whose dedication and expertise contributed to the successful completion of the rehabilitation project.
He said their efforts demonstrate the importance of collaboration in advancing Liberia’s infrastructure and development agenda.
The rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee turbine and the commissioning of the new solar plant underscore the government’s broader strategy to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure, increase electricity access, and create a more sustainable energy future for Liberia.
