Nationwide Justice Outreach Campaign Set Ahead of War and Economic Crimes Court

By: Cooper K Sangar Jr.

Monrovia, LiberiaThe Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia (OWECC-L), in collaboration with transitional justice actors, has officially announced the launch of its National Outreach Campaign, a transformative initiative aimed at addressing impunity and promoting accountability across the country.

Launched under the theme “Justice for All”, the campaign kicks off on Saturday, July 19, 2025, with outreach activities set to extend across all fifteen counties and the Liberian diaspora.

This nationwide effort marks a historic milestone in Liberia’s journey toward establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court and the National Anti-Corruption Court—two long-awaited institutions central to justice, reconciliation, and national healing.

In a statement released on Friday, OWECC-L said the campaign is designed to deepen public understanding of the courts’ mandates and Liberia’s broader transitional justice roadmap.

It aims to promote inclusive dialogue among citizens, survivors, and key stakeholders, while encouraging community involvement in justice reform and civic education.

OWECC-L’s Executive Director, Dr. Jallah A. Barbu, emphasized the campaign’s nationwide and inclusive approach, stating:

“Montserrado is not Liberia alone. We will work to ensure that every county is fully involved in this process. Justice must be accessible to all.”

The campaign is guided by the National Communication and Outreach Strategy for Transitional Justice, which was developed through consultations with civil society organizations, media professionals, traditional leaders, and international partners.

Key components of the outreach include: Truth-telling forums, Safe spaces for survivors to share their stories and Public education through radio, social media, community theater, and grassroots engagement

Core messages such as “Justice is everybody’s business,” “You are not forgotten,” “Justice is your right, ”and“ Delayed justice is not denied justice” will be amplified across Liberia’s diverse communities to foster awareness and participation.

According to OWECC-L, the National Anti-Corruption Court is projected to be launched in November 2026, with the War and Economic Crimes Court expected to be fully operational by November 2027.

These courts represent a bold and necessary step toward ending a legacy of impunity and restoring public confidence in Liberia’s justice system.
