Senate Orders Probe Into Port Contracts Amid Rising Fees

NATIONAL NEWS

CAPITOL HILL – The Liberian Senate has unanimously voted to investigate concession agreements involving Medtech, CTN, and APM Terminals amid growing concerns over high charges and the rising cost of doing business at the Freeport of Monrovia.

The decision followed a communication from Montserrado County Senator Saah Joseph, who called for a comprehensive review of the agreements, arguing that businesses, importers, and port users continue to face mounting costs associated with port operations.

“It is high time for the Senate to revisit these contractual agreements,” Senator Joseph told plenary, urging his colleagues to determine whether the contracts are serving the best interests of the Liberian people.

Following deliberations, the Senate mandated a Committee of the Whole hearing and summoned the National Port Authority (NPA), National Bureau of Concessions (NBC), APM Terminals, Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), Ministry of Justice, Medtech, and CTN to appear before lawmakers on June 10.

During the hearing, senators are expected to examine the benefits Liberia is receiving under the agreements, concerns surrounding multiple fees and charges, the possible duplication of services, and whether such contracts should be subject to legislative approval.

The investigation marks a significant Senate review of key port-related agreements as lawmakers seek answers over costs that continue to affect businesses, importers, and consumers across the country.
