Senate Orders Investigation Into Alleged Salary Deductions for River Gee County Commissioners

MONROVIA The Liberian Senate has called for a full-scale investigation into alleged unlawful salary deductions affecting District Commissioners in River Gee County, following concerns raised by Senator Jonathan Boy-Charles Sogbie.

Senator Sogbie reported that some Commissioners received as little as $50 USD or L$6,000, far below their legally mandated salaries.

Initial reports suggest that these reductions may be linked to new appointments by the President, with portions of existing officials’ salaries allegedly redirected to compensate newly appointed personnel.

In response, the Senate’s Plenary has tasked the Committees on Internal Affairs and Ways, Means, Finance, and Budget to conduct a comprehensive review of the allegations.

The committees are expected to engage relevant authorities and submit findings and recommendations for legislative action within two weeks.

Senator Sogbie noted that the Ministry’s non-compliance has hindered his oversight responsibilities and caused unnecessary hardship for Commissioners and citizens in River Gee County.

The investigation seeks to restore accountability in public funds management and ensure fair compensation for local officials.
