SINOE COUNTY – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, has pledged legislative support to restore the Health Sciences Department at Sinoe Community College and help elevate the institution to university status.

Delivering the keynote address at the College’s Third Commencement Convocation in Greenville, Speaker Koon described education as the most powerful tool for transforming lives and communities, while congratulating the institution’s 33 graduates for their perseverance and academic achievement.
The Speaker said the closure of the College’s Health Sciences Department following a decision by the Nursing Board over inadequate infrastructure has deprived many young people of the opportunity to pursue careers in nursing and other health professions.
He emphasized that the southeastern region urgently needs more trained healthcare professionals.
“As Speaker of the House of Representatives, I am committing to work with the administration of the College and the leadership of Sinoe to ensure that the Nursing Department is restored,” Koon declared.
He said the Legislature would work to ensure the necessary infrastructure and standards are put in place so the program can resume training qualified healthcare workers for Sinoe County and the country.
Koon stressed that reopening the department is about more than restoring an academic program, saying it represents renewed hope for young people, expanded educational opportunities, and a stronger healthcare system for Liberia.
The Speaker also pledged increased legislative support to help Sinoe Community College achieve university status in the coming years.
He said the county deserves one of the country’s leading higher education institutions and reaffirmed the Legislature’s commitment to strengthening the College’s capacity.
Reflecting on the institution’s growth, Koon noted that since opening its doors in 2017, Sinoe Community College has expanded educational opportunities in southeastern Liberia and, with the graduation of 33 additional students, continues to produce professionals who are contributing to education, public service, agriculture, business and other sectors of national development.
He urged the graduates to uphold integrity, professionalism and excellence as they enter the workforce, reminding them that their education marks the beginning of a lifelong responsibility to serve their communities and contribute to Liberia’s development.
