Voting Gets Underway in Nimba County

NIMBA – Voting has gotten underway in Nimba County in a by-election meant to replace the vacant seat left by the county’s longest serving Senator Prince Johnson.

Senator Johnson died in 2024 at a local hospital in Paynesville City following a brief illness and was buried in his native Nimba County at the beginning of 2025.

Seven candidates are standing in the by-election with a lone female candidate.

In an update released by the National Elections Commission on early Tuesday, the electoral commission confirmed that voting actually begun at 8AM in Ganta City and other parts of the county.

“We encourage the public, especially the people of Nimba, to keep following the NEC Liberia on www.necliberia.org or necliberia@facebook.com for more credible news.” The electoral body said.

Local journalists covering the by-election are reporting low turnout at the moment while confirming that security situation in calm with the presence of the joint security.

The political campaign was marred by tribal, traditional and anti-feminist divide.
