Over 600 Women in Bomi Set to Benefit from Empowerment Drive

By: Gabriel Parker

Bomi County, Liberia More than 600 women across Bomi County are poised to benefit from a transformative new initiative aimed at boosting economic independence and improving livelihoods.

Dubbed the Liberia Women Empowerment Project, the initiative is backed by a $36.6 million grant from the World Bank, channeled through the Government of Liberia via the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

In an exclusive with LENN, Bomi County Gender Coordinator Madam Miatta Monger described the program as a “game-changer” for rural women.

“This funding is meant to support women-led initiatives in six of Liberia’s fifteen counties, and Bomi is fortunate to be among them,” she said.

The project, set to run over a three-year period, will touch more than eighty communities across all five administrative districts in Bomi.

Planned activities include training programs, village savings and loan schemes, and agricultural cooperatives.

Madam Monger emphasized the initiative’s goal of building sustainable futures for women, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.

“This initiative is specifically designed to build the capacity of rural women and enable them to meaningfully contribute to their communities,” she noted.

Community selection was based on a comprehensive assessment conducted in collaboration with local partners.

Dewoin District emerged with the highest number of selected communities—33 in total—while the other four districts will each see 16 communities participating.

“We conducted assessments in each district, and based on the findings, we were able to determine which communities would be prioritized,” Monger explained.

As the program kicks off, it represents more than just financial aid—it signals a renewed commitment to gender equity, grassroots development, and the empowerment of Liberia’s rural women.
