LNP Clarifies Role in Nyanti Investigation, Denies Any Dealings

MONROVIA – The Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Gregory Coleman, has firmly denied recent allegations made by John Nyanti, which he accused the police of attempting to bribe or manipulate him in the high-profile criminal before Criminal Court “A.”

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), IG Coleman emphasized that at no time did the LNP engage in any unethical behavior or offer inducements to the suspect.

“I want to set the record straight: The Liberia National Police did not, and will not, offer Mr. Nyanti or anyone else a bribe, reward, or any form of incentive in exchange for false testimony,” Coleman stated firmly. “No officer within the LNP has the authority to make such a deal on behalf of the government or the institution.”

Coleman reiterated that the LNP operates strictly within the bounds of the law and remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and integrity in all its operations.

He described the allegations as not only unfounded but also harmful to the reputation of the police force, which continues to work diligently to uphold justice and maintain public trust.

Providing context on Mr. Nyanti’s involvement in the case, IG Coleman disclosed that Nyanti was identified early on as a person of interest.

However, he initially refused to cooperate with law enforcement and subsequently left the country.

According to Coleman, Nyanti’s return to Liberia was not the result of any arrangement with the police, but rather due to the intervention of a close family member.

“It was through a relative that we were able to reestablish contact with Mr. Nyanti,” Coleman explained. “This family member assured us that he was willing to return to Liberia and cooperate with the investigation in his capacity as a witness.”
