BOMI COUNTY – Authorities in Bomi County have launched an investigation into a harrowing case of child abuse involving a Sierra Leonean national accused of setting his 13-year-old son on fire.
The suspect, identified as Amara Varney, a resident of Gbah Jarkeh Township, allegedly tied up his son, before dousing him with a flammable substance and setting him alight.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in the Zone Six community of Gbah Jarkeh Town.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing the boy’s desperate screams for help before neighbors intervened, extinguishing the flames and rushing him to a nearby clinic.

James (not his real name) sustained severe burns and is currently being treated at a local Community Clinic, where medical staff have described his condition as critical but stable.
Police have since taken Amara Varney into custody as investigations continue.
sWhile the motive remains unclear, unconfirmed reports suggest the incident may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Community members have expressed deep concern, with one resident stating that this is not the first time Mr. Varney has displayed violent behavior.
“This is a heartbreaking situation. We are working closely with law enforcement and health authorities to ensure the child receives the necessary care and that justice is served,” a local official said.
