20 CDC Officials Defect to Unity Party, Cite Governance Gains

By: James Myking Suah

Nimba County — Amid the ongoing protest by a group of Liberians, at least twenty affiliates and executives from the Nimba County chapter of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) have officially resigned from the party.

They have pledged their support to the ruling Unity Party Alliance and the Movement for Democratic Reconstruction (MDR) ahead of the 2029 general elections.

Key figures among the defectors include Mr. Thomas Q. Suah, Nathan Beibli, and Julius Gbamie.

During a formal ceremony held in Sanniquellie on July 17, Thomas Q. Suah read a joint endorsement statement, citing the Boakai-Koung administration’s commitment to good governance and development as the basis for their decision to switch allegiance.

According to Suah, the group’s choice followed a “thorough observation” of the Unity Party Alliance’s performance in office, particularly in tackling systemic underdevelopment and corruption.

He praised the administration’s actions, including the suspension and dismissal of officials accused of corruption—followed by referrals for legal investigation.

The former CDC members also commended the administration for appointing qualified and experienced Liberians to strategic government positions at both national and local levels. As evidence, they pointed to the appointments of the Superintendents of Nimba and Bong Counties.

Suah highlighted a significant improvement in infrastructure, noting that travel time from Monrovia to the southeastern region—previously taking up to two weeks under the CDC administration—has now been reduced to just a few hours.

The group further cited government efforts to eliminate payroll-padding and ghost names in the civil service. They acknowledged that corrective measures have enabled the employment of previously unpaid volunteer teachers, healthcare workers, and others.

In their statement, the former CDC stalwarts also lauded the administration’s commitment to due process, particularly in prosecuting former officials accused of corruption and other offenses in competent courts.

They expressed strong support for the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court, calling it a bold step toward ending impunity. The group also praised the administration’s promotion of democratic values and its willingness to allow public criticism and accountability.

Backing the election of Senator Nyan D. Twayen (Unity Party) and Senator Samuel Kogar (MDR), the defectors emphasized their commitment to the idea of “Nimba Unity for Nimba Development.” Suah concluded, “It makes no political sense to oppose our own creation.”

In closing, the group declared: “Therefore, in light of the current circumstances, we, the like-minded affiliates and executives from the CDC Nimba County chapter, hereby publicly announce our resignation from the CDC and call on fellow members to follow our example.”

The event was attended by Unity Party officials and local stakeholders from across Nimba County. Meanwhile, several residents of Nimba have welcomed the group’s decision, celebrating what they described as a bold political move in favor of progress and accountability.
