Capitol Hill – The Liberian Senate has overwhelmingly confirmed Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia, following a unanimous vote during a Senate plenary session.

Justice Gbeisay’s confirmation comes after a formal recommendation from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Claims, and Petitions, which endorsed his nomination by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

The President nominated Justice Gbeisay to succeed Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh, who has retired upon reaching the constitutional age limit of 70, as mandated by Article 72(b) of the 1986 Liberian Constitution.

Article 72(b) stipulates that: “The Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the subordinate courts of record shall be retired at the age of seventy; provided, however, that a Justice or Judge may continue in office for as long as may be necessary to enable him to render judgment or perform any other judicial duty in regard to proceedings entertained by him before he attained the age of seventy.”

Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon filed the motion for confirmation, which was swiftly and unanimously endorsed by all 24 Senators present.

The confirmation marks a key moment in the country’s ongoing judicial transition and underscores strong bipartisan support for Justice Gbeisay.

Following the vote, Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence instructed the Secretary of the Senate to formally communicate the decision to the Executive Mansion.

Justice Gbeisay now prepares to assume the highest judicial position in the country, bringing years of experience from the Supreme Court bench.

His confirmation is widely seen as a move to ensure stability, continuity, and integrity within Liberia’s judiciary.
