China Awards Scholarships to Over 200 Liberians for Local and Overseas Study

By: Cooper K. Sangar Jr.

MONROVIA – The Chinese Government has awarded scholarship opportunities to more than 200 Liberians for advanced tertiary education, both locally and abroad.

As part of the initiative, 92 Liberians will depart for China, while 172 others will enroll at several local universities, including the University of Liberia, Tubman University, Cuttington University, and Bomi Community College.

Speaking at a reception held Monday in Monrovia for the scholarship recipients, Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu described the event as “a moment filled with hope and honor.” He emphasized that the scholarship program is designed to strengthen bilateral ties and foster mutual development.

“The China scholarship, in whatever forms, is intended to enhance exchanges and cooperation, promote mutual understanding and friendship between China and Liberia.

It fully demonstrates China’s commitment to the China-Liberia strategic partnership and building a community with a shared future for humanity,” Ambassador Yin said.

The Ambassador commended the Liberian Government for placing education at the heart of its national priorities through President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST Agenda.

“Education is a key priority of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, which China highly commends. China remains steadfast in strengthening education and human resource cooperation with Liberia, sharing knowledge, technology, and development experience in various forms,” he noted.

Ambassador Yin also highlighted the longstanding education partnership between the two countries, citing the construction of the University of Liberia’s Fendell Campus, the refurbishment of the Monrovia Vocational Training Center, and the introduction of Chinese language classes through the Confucius Institute.

Since 1981, approximately 2,000 Liberians have studied in China under similar scholarship programs.

He encouraged the scholarship recipients to remain focused and return to contribute to national development upon completing their studies.

“You are the future of the nation and the hope of the people. After completing your studies, try to serve the people, serve the country, and contribute your wisdom and talents to the nation,” he urged.

Also speaking at the event, Education Minister Dr. Jarso Jallah expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government for its continued support to Liberia’s education sector. She said the scholarship initiative reflects the growing partnership and shared commitment to development between the two nations.

Dr. Jallah encouraged the awardees to remain dedicated to their studies and to “contribute meaningfully to national growth and transformation.”
