Liberia’s Health Watchdog Still in a Container — NPHIL Director Sounds Alarm

By: Staff Writer

MONROVIA – The Director General of the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, has raised concerns that the institution is still operating from a container.

Early Tuesday morning, September 23, 2025, the Liberian biomedical scientist and inventor took to social media (Facebook) to share images of the container serving as his office.

NPHIL is a center of excellence dedicated to improving health outcomes for Liberians through a strong health system, focusing on preventing and controlling public health threats.

The institute is located directly opposite the 72nd Boulevard Junction in Congo Town.

The post sparked outrage among many Liberians, who questioned why the country’s only public health institute continues to operate from a container since its establishment.

Dr. Nyan highlighted the concern but did not elaborate on how operating from the container is affecting NPHIL’s work.
