Grand Bassa County – A joint team comprising the Grand Bassa County Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) has commenced a fact-finding mission in District One in response to reports of a potential oil discovery in Doewein Town, located just 15 minutes from the Owengrove Checkpoint.
The mission, led by Grand Bassa Administrative Officer James W. Duen, brought together EPA directors and local district and town leaders to engage directly with the community and collect samples for laboratory testing.
These results will later be shared with the County Authority and the residents of Grand Bassa County.
During the sampling process, residents provided historical context regarding the alleged oil discovery, with several claiming to have extracted substantial quantities—reportedly hundreds of six-gallon containers—which they have been storing at their homes while awaiting official confirmation.
Preliminary excavations around Doewein Town by technicians and community members revealed the presence of a black substance, though official confirmation will depend on the EPA’s laboratory analysis.
Authorities have promised to keep the public updated on developments, including through an upcoming video documentary that will capture the full scope of the investigation.
