Grand Bassa Set to Shine: 500 Streetlights to Transform Key Communities

Buchanan – Grand Bassa County is set to witness a significant improvement in public lighting as authorities announce plans to install 500 streetlights across key communities, marking a major milestone in the ongoing Buchanan Electrification Project.

According to county officials, areas including Grand Bassa University–Paynesberry, Korean Farm, Fairground, and Hotel Buchanan will be among the first beneficiaries of the new lighting initiative, which aims to brighten major roads, enhance public safety, and improve nighttime economic activities.

The disclosure was made when Superintendent Karyou Johnson and members of the County Leadership held a meeting with MBH Power to receive an update on the transformative project—described as one of the most impactful undertakings in the county’s recent history.

“For decades, our people have lived under the weight of darkness,” Superintendent Johnson said. “Children have struggled to study under extreme conditions using lanterns and candles, families have prayed for light, and businesses have fought to survive due to the high cost of their own power sources. But their prayers have been answered.”

County authorities credit the progress to the “visionary leadership” of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., along with the sustained support of the Grand Bassa Legislative Caucus, both of whom continue to play crucial roles in advancing electrification efforts across the region.

The installation of the new streetlights is expected to begin soon, signaling what local leaders describe as a new chapter of hope, development, and expanded opportunities for the people of Grand Bassa County.
