MONROVIA In a move to modernize city governance and promote data-driven decision-making, the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) has launched a two-day intensive data training program for staff of the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC).

The AMALI Data Programme, which officially began on Monday, June 7, 2025, at the Monrovia City Hall, is part of Mayor John Siafa’s broader capacity-building efforts aimed at transforming Monrovia into a smart and efficiently managed city.

The initiative is designed to equip city employees with the skills needed to use data for improved service delivery, policy evaluation, and operational efficiency.

The training focused on teaching participants how to collect, analyze, and apply data to monitor performance indicators, evaluate program outcomes, and identify opportunities for improvement. It also emphasized using data as a core tool for planning, reporting, and achieving measurable results aligned with the Mayor’s legacy development goals.

“This is a timely and strategic investment in our city workforce,” said Mayor Siafa in a statement. “The ability to effectively use data will not only improve how we manage resources but will also enhance transparency, accountability, and the overall quality of life for Monrovia’s residents.”

Since the launch of the AMALI Data Programme in 2023, more than 20 African cities have benefited from tailored technical support, coaching, and training provided by dedicated City Data Advisors.

Monrovia is now among the growing list of cities embracing data as a transformative asset in urban governance.

Participants of the training were drawn from various departments within the MCC and engaged in sessions on data management best practices, results-based monitoring, and practical techniques for using data to improve urban programming.

The AMALI Data Programme reflects a broader continental shift toward smart city development and aligns with Liberia’s national development agenda, which places emphasis on innovation, accountability, and efficient service delivery at all levels of government.

As Monrovia joins the movement toward data-driven governance, city officials and residents alike are hopeful that these efforts will yield tangible improvements in city services and urban development.
