MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has vowed not to allow fear, threats, or incitement to undermine the nation’s hard-won peace, as investigations into a recent arson attack on the Capitol Building point to involvement by high-profile officials and private citizens.

Following a months-long investigation conducted in collaboration with the Joint Security, the LNP has concluded its inquiry into the Capitol Building arson attack—an incident that significantly threatened national stability.

Addressing the nation on Friday, June 6, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gregory Coleman emphasized that the findings are grounded in verified evidence and guided strictly by the law.

“These findings are not based on assumptions or opinions—they are facts supported by credible evidence,” IGP Coleman stated.

As a result of the investigation, four lawmakers have been charged with multiple crimes. Those charged include former House Speaker Fonati Koffa and Representatives Jacob Debee, Dixon Seboe, and Abu Kamara. All four are currently being held at the Monrovia Central Prison.

In a follow-up statement posted on Facebook on the evening of Saturday, June 7, IGP Coleman reiterated the impartiality of the investigation:

“Let me be clear: this is not a political battle. This is a matter of justice. The law does not see colors or party lines—it sees facts, and it demands accountability.”

He further emphasized that the accused will be given the opportunity to defend themselves in court, in accordance with their constitutional rights.

IGP Coleman also warned those inciting unrest or promoting violence, reminding the public of the sacrifices Liberia has made for peace.

“The police will not permit a return to instability. Liberia has paid a heavy price for peace, and we are committed to preserving it,” he warned.

The charges filed are based on provisions of the Revised Penal Code of Liberia and include arson, criminal conspiracy, and related offenses.

Reassuring the public, Coleman concluded: “The Liberia National Police remains vigilant, professional, and committed to protecting all citizens without bias or favor. We urge every Liberian—regardless of affiliation—to remain calm and respect the judicial process.”
