MONROVIA – The Global Methodist Church (GMC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct 241 new churches across Liberia over the next three years.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Conference Superintendent Rev. Dr. Jerry P. Kulah, who described the initiative as a cornerstone of the denomination’s strategic focus on expansion and church planting.

“The church has committed itself to planting 241 new churches in the next three years across Liberia,” Rev. Kulah stated.

He noted that the GMC currently comprises over 150 congregations with a growing nationwide membership of more than 26,000 people.

Rev. Kulah emphasized that the construction of new churches is intended to meet the rising spiritual and community needs throughout Liberia. He also disclosed that members of the GMC have pledged financial contributions to support the establishment of the new worship centers.

The Global Methodist Church officially launched in Liberia on February 14, 2025, following a major denominational split. Over 100 congregations previously affiliated with the United Methodist Church joined the GMC, led by Rev. Kulah and other clergy.

The Global Methodist Church was originally established on May 1, 2022, by conservative Methodists in the United States. The movement emerged in response to disagreements over the United Methodist Church’s evolving stance on same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ+ clergy.

The split was primarily driven by theological concerns, including opposition to same-sex marriage, rejection of LGBTQ+ clergy, and resistance to the UMC’s proposed regionalization model, which would allow for more progressive practices in certain areas.

At the Ganta Annual Conference, held July 7–13, 2025, the GMC Liberia formally organized under the name “Grain Coast Annual Conference.” Nigerian Bishop John Pena Auta was named presiding bishop, while Rev. Dr. Jerry P. Kulah was appointed as Conference Superintendent.
