Dr. Komla, a Togolese national and seasoned development expert, assumes leadership of the WFP at a critical time as Liberia continues efforts to enhance food security, emergency preparedness, and sustainable agricultural development.
Ambassador Davis extended a warm welcome to the new Country Director, commending the World Food Programme for its longstanding support to Liberia through periods of crisis and post-war recovery. She highlighted WFP’s vital role in assisting vulnerable populations and strengthening national resilience.
“We continue our cooperation with you in the area of food security, emergency response, and sustainable agriculture,” Ambassador Davis said. “I wish you a successful tenure as Country Director of the WFP.”
Reflecting on Liberia’s post-war transformation, Ambassador Davis underscored the nation’s commitment to peace and development, noting that stability remains the foundation for progress.
“We as Liberians realized long ago that nobody benefits from war,” she stated. “We have made a commitment that we are never going back to war. The transformation you see today reflects our determination to put the past behind us and build a better future.”
In response, Dr. Komla expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening collaboration between the WFP and the Liberian government. He praised Liberia’s dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goals of zero hunger, improved nutrition, and quality education.
Dr. Komla noted that since his arrival, he has observed significant improvements in national stability and security, which he described as essential for sustainable development. He pledged to leverage the WFP’s technical expertise, global resources, and proven interventions to support Liberia’s national development priorities.
The World Food Programme remains a key development and humanitarian partner in Liberia, providing emergency food assistance during crises while supporting long-term resilience initiatives, including nutrition services, school feeding programs, and support for smallholder farmers.
