Gov’t, World Bank Convene National Dialogue to Push Women and Girls Protection Bill

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), with support from the World Bank through the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), will on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, hold its Second National Policy Dialogue aimed at strengthening gender equality and women’s empowerment across Liberia.

The high-level engagement will convene lawmakers, senior government officials, development partners, civil society actors, women’s rights advocates, and other stakeholders to deepen consensus and fast-track key gender-related legal reforms.

Discussions will center on the Women and Girls Protection Bill, a proposed legislation intended to close critical legal gaps that continue to leave women and girls vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and exclusion.

The dialogue builds on previous policy discussions held in May and December 2024, where stakeholders identified priority reforms, including the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Prohibition Bill, the Legal Aid Service Bill, and proposed amendments to electoral laws to boost women’s representation in the National Legislature.

With the Women and Girls Protection Bill already submitted to the Legislature by President Joseph Boakai, the Ministry says it is stepping up advocacy efforts to ensure the Bill receives prompt legislative action.

Officials say the policy dialogue will also develop a coordinated advocacy roadmap to guide stakeholder actions, strengthen cross-sector collaboration, and foster legislative champions—particularly within the House Standing Committees on Gender Equity, Judiciary, and Health—to push the Bill forward.

The Ministry noted that the dialogue supports the Government of Liberia’s ARREST Agenda, especially the Human Capital Development pillar, which emphasizes inclusive governance, protection of vulnerable groups, and the enforcement of laws that promote equity, dignity, and shared prosperity, with particular focus on women and girls.
