Kuyateh Urges Boakai to Lead Direct Reconciliation with Weah

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA – Ambassador-at-Large Kuyateh has called on Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. to take a more direct role in advancing Liberia’s reconciliation process by personally engaging former President George Weah.

Speaking Tuesday on OK FM, Kuyateh acknowledged ongoing efforts by the Boakai administration to improve livelihoods and infrastructure, including road construction. However, he stressed that national reconciliation cannot be achieved through government programs alone.

He emphasized that meaningful reconciliation requires direct engagement between the country’s top political leaders. “Both the former president and the current president should meet,” Kuyateh said, warning that Liberia cannot move forward effectively if its leaders remain divided and operate in isolation.

Kuyateh further argued that reconciliation efforts are being slowed by entrenched barriers within political leadership circles. According to him, close associates around both Boakai and Weah are contributing to delays in building trust at the highest level.

He maintained that without face-to-face dialogue between the two leaders, reconciliation will remain incomplete, prolonging political and social divisions across the country.

While acknowledging recent reconciliation steps by President Boakai—including reburial ceremonies for former leaders Samuel K. Doe and William R. Tolbert Jr.—Kuyateh said symbolic gestures alone are insufficient to fully heal the nation.

He urged President Boakai, citing his seniority and leadership responsibility, to go beyond ceremonial actions and take the lead in initiating direct dialogue, including a personal outreach or visit to former President Weah.

“He should take the lead,” Kuyateh emphasized, calling for renewed reconciliation efforts anchored in high-level engagement and sustained political will.
