MONROVIA – The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has announced the commencement of an investigation following allegations made by Sabey Varpilah, a recent traveler who passed through Roberts International Airport (RIA). Varpilah claims that personal belongings went missing from his luggage after interactions with customs officers during his departure on May 16 via Royal Air Maroc.
The allegations, which surfaced on social media, have attracted significant public attention. In his account, Varpilah described a troubling encounter with airport staff after being asked to repack his luggage due to weight issues.
He stated that, with ATMs reportedly not working, he was forced to pay excess baggage fees in cash. He was then called aside for carrying food items that, according to personnel, required proper certification.
Varpilah alleged that during this interaction, customs officers subtly hinted at needing “compensation” for the lack of documentation. He said he was unable to comply due to not having U.S. dollars on hand, but was eventually permitted to continue to immigration.
Upon arrival in the United States, he discovered that nine parcels were missing from his checked boxes—some of which he had been carrying for others.
“The way this incident was handled leads me to believe the boxes were tampered with after I was escorted away,” Varpilah wrote. “Had I been told I couldn’t carry those items, I would have left them with my family. The fact that they were taken without any explanation is unacceptable.”
In an official response issued on Monday, May 19, the LAA expressed concern over the report and confirmed a formal investigation is underway. The authority emphasized its commitment to transparency, integrity, and the protection of passengers’ rights.
“We take these allegations seriously,” the LAA stated. “A review of CCTV footage from the relevant timeframe is already in progress, and we are calling on Mr. Varpilah to provide additional details to assist the investigation.”
Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, the LAA assured the public that anyone found responsible will be held accountable.
This incident adds to ongoing concerns surrounding operations at RIA, Liberia’s main international airport, which has faced previous criticism over service quality and traveler treatment. The case has reignited calls for improved infrastructure, stricter enforcement of airport regulations, and a crackdown on informal practices that can leave passengers feeling pressured or vulnerable.
The LAA is encouraging other travelers to report similar incidents and has reaffirmed its commitment to following all appropriate procedures in the interest of justice and operational integrity.
