In a statement issued Wednesday, Inspector General of Police Gregory O. W. Coleman ordered the widened probe after visiting Bong County, where he met with members of the bereaved family, engaged local authorities, and reviewed initial findings from the ongoing inquiry.

The Police IG said the decision reflects the institution’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and a full examination of all circumstances surrounding the case.

Arrest, Release, and Subsequent Death Under Scrutiny

Police records indicate that Mr. Charles Kollie was arrested on April 30, 2026, in connection with allegations of criminal conspiracy and theft of property. He was released on May 4, 2026, pending further investigation.

His death following his release has triggered public questions about the handling of his detention, the decision-making process behind his release, and events that occurred thereafter.

The LNP acknowledged that the matter has generated “legitimate public concern” and stressed the need for a thorough and independent review.

Internal Review Expanded

As part of the new directive, the Inspector General has ordered a detailed administrative and investigative review focusing on several key areas, including: Compliance with detention and release procedures, decision-making processes surrounding Kollie’s release, conduct and supervisory responsibilities of officers involved and ossible institutional or procedural gaps requiring correction

The Police said the Professional Standards Division has been instructed to broaden its inquiry in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure the process remains “objective, evidence-based, and comprehensive.”

Forensic and Medical Findings Awaited

The LNP further confirmed that it will rely on medical, forensic, and other evidentiary assessments to establish the cause and manner of death as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials said these findings will be central to determining what transpired following Kollie’s release from custody.

Commitment to Accountability and Reform

The Police leadership emphasized that the review is not limited to determining the circumstances of the death, but also aimed at strengthening institutional integrity and restoring public confidence in the justice system.

“The Liberia National Police will ensure that where procedural violations, misconduct, or lapses in professional responsibility are established, appropriate administrative and legal actions will be taken in accordance with the laws of Liberia,” the statement noted.

Inspector General Coleman also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to fairness, due process, and respect for human rights.

Public Urged to Remain Calm

The LNP has urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, misinformation, or conclusions while the investigation continues.

Authorities assured that the public will be updated as credible information becomes available, emphasizing that the process will be conducted independently and professionally.
