MONROVIA – The President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Senator Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, has reported that the Senate passed 33 pieces of legislation during the Third Session of the 55th Legislature, while achieving an 81 percent implementation rate for audit recommendations, as lawmakers resumed legislative activities.

According to the Senate’s report, lawmakers held 47 sittings during the session, comprising 41 regular sittings, five special-session sittings, and one emergency sitting.
The Senate also received more than 155 communications, considered 60 committee reports, conducted 13 Committee of the Whole hearings, and received 62 nominations for confirmation. Of those nominations, 56 were confirmed.
The 33 pieces of legislation passed included 12 ratifications, 10 amendments, and 11 enactments. However, 113 bills remain in committee rooms awaiting further consideration.
Karngar-Lawrence called for greater urgency in processing pending legislation, particularly those before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which she said had the largest number of assigned bills because of their legal implications.
She directed the Judiciary Committee to organize a retreat involving relevant government agencies and experts, with the Committee on Ways, Means and Finance expected to assist in identifying funding for the exercise.
The retreat, she said, should help accelerate the review of outstanding bills and improve the timely submission of committee reports.
