CAPITOL HILL – Senators Amara Konneh and Edwin Melvin Snowe have called on the Liberian Senate to urgently intervene and support an independent investigation into the reported US$19 million drug seizure at Roberts International Airport (RIA).

In a communication addressed to Senate President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, the lawmakers described the case as a matter of “grave national concern,” warning that it continues to generate public anxiety and raises serious questions about Liberia’s security, governance, and international reputation.
They noted that more than three weeks after the reported interception of suspected narcotics at RIA, there has been limited official information on the progress of investigations.
The communication also expressed concern over the absence of publicly confirmed arrests of key suspects and what they described as a lack of adequate communication from relevant security institutions.
The senators warned that the delay in providing clear updates has fueled public speculation, weakened confidence in law enforcement agencies, and heightened concerns about the effectiveness of Liberia’s anti-drug enforcement system.
They therefore urged the Senate to exercise its oversight responsibility by engaging plenary intervention and ensuring a transparent and independent review of the matter to restore public trust.
Meanwhile, the Senate has already moved to summon the joint security headed by the Minister of Justice to appear before Plenary on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 11am and provide a full update on the ongoing investigation into the high-profile drug seizure.
