MONROVIA – The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) has paid a high-level courtesy call on Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, Liberia’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, at the Ministry of Justice in Monrovia.
The visit forms part of the SPT’s ongoing mission to Liberia, aimed at assessing the country’s efforts to prevent torture and other ill-treatment in detention facilities, in line with its obligations under the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT).
During the engagement, the SPT delegation held constructive discussions with Minister Tweh on Liberia’s legal and institutional frameworks for protecting human rights, preventing torture, and strengthening national mechanisms for monitoring detention facilities.
Minister Tweh welcomed the delegation, reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards, enhancing transparency, and promoting accountability within the justice and corrections systems.
He also emphasized the government’s willingness to cooperate fully with the SPT and other international partners to advance reforms and promote the rule of law.
The courtesy call marks a significant step in strengthening collaboration between Liberia and the United Nations in ongoing efforts to prevent torture and ensure humane treatment for all persons in detention.
Minister Tweh was accompanied by key officials, including Deputy Minister for Administration and Public Safety, Cllr. Cora N. Hare Konuwa; Assistant Minister for the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Atty. Gabriel F. Ndupelllar; Head of Human Rights Section, Kutaka Devine Togbah; Director of Alternative Dispute Resolution, A. Gobah Anderson; Head of the Gender and Social Inclusion Unit (GSIU), Maude M. Somah; and Head of the Child Justice Section, Atty. J. Alben Greaves, among others.
