PAYNESVILLE – Former Liberian President George Weah has returned to Liberia after several months out of the country, receiving a massive welcome from thousands of supporters who gathered at the Roberts International Airport in Margibi County.

Supporters of the former president, many dressed in the colors and regalia of his political party, turned out in large numbers to welcome him back home.

Following his arrival, Mr. Weah was escorted by supporters and sympathizers from the airport to his residence in Rehab Community, Paynesville, in a show of strong political support.

The former president had been out of Liberia for several months, during which he attended to FIFA-related duties and followed the football career of his son, Timothy Weah, who represented the United States Men’s National Team.

Mr. Weah later travelled to Accra, Ghana, before proceeding to Nigeria, where he honored an invitation from the Nigerian Bar.

Weah Speaks on Charges Against Former Vice President

Responding to journalists upon his return, former President Weah was asked about the charges facing his former vice president.

Mr. Weah expressed concern over the situation, arguing that the rule of law must be respected and describing what he characterized as the government’s treatment of the former vice president as unacceptable.

“I think the rule of law is being temporary. I believe that what is going on with former VP, the government, they all boo us and it’s unacceptable.”

He further questioned the conduct of the government, saying such actions should not happen in a true democracy.

“You can’t, you can’t, in a true democracy, you can’t behave in this way. It’s wrong.”

Mr. Weah also criticized what he described as “temporary justice,” stressing that the justice system must be protected.

“You know, temporary justice is wrong.”

The former president added:

“And I believe that the justice system, uh, it’ll come a time that we have to protect.”

His comments come amid ongoing public and political debate surrounding the legal case involving his former vice president, with supporters of the former administration closely following developments.

Supporters Turn Out in Their Thousands

The former president’s return triggered a major show of support, with large crowds gathering at the airport and along the route leading to his Rehab residence.

Party supporters, many wearing their party colors, chanted and celebrated as they accompanied Mr. Weah from the airport to Paynesville.

His return marks his first major public appearance in Liberia after several months abroad and is expected to renew political discussions ahead of the country’s evolving political landscape.

Mr. Weah served as Liberia’s president from 2018 to 2024 and remains a major political figure and leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change.
