Fassell, Blackman Warrior Battle to Goalless Draws in CAF Competitions

By: Perry B. Zordyu

Paynesville –Liberian football fans witnessed mixed fortunes over the weekend as both FC Fassell and Blackman Warrior FC were held to goalless draws in their respective CAF competitions at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

On Saturday, First Division champions FC Fassell held North African giants MC Algers to a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying clash.

Despite creating chances, both sides were denied by resolute defending and strong goalkeeping.

The result leaves the tie finely poised, with Fassell needing either a win or a scoring draw in the return leg on Sunday, September 28, in Algiers to progress to the next round.

Fassell qualified for this year’s tournament after clinching the 2024–25 LFA First Division title.

Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, Blackman Warrior FC, Liberia’s Orange Cup champions, were also held to a goalless draw by Coton Sport of Benin in their CAF Confederation Cup encounter.

The Warriors now face a difficult path to the next round amid uncertainty in their camp. Head coach Sam Chebli reportedly resigned immediately after the match, citing pressure from club officials who blamed him for the home draw.

Adding to their woes, several players have allegedly abandoned camp due to unpaid wages from last season.

Efforts to reach club officials for comment proved unsuccessful. With the return leg fast approaching, Blackman Warrior may be forced to rely on their deputy coach to guide the team in Benin.

Like Fassell, they must secure either a win or a score draw away from home to advance.

For Liberian football, the weekend results keep hope alive but highlight the challenges ahead.

Both clubs face decisive fixtures this coming weekend that could determine Liberia’s representation in the continental competitions.
