Rep. Ivar K. Jones Dedicates New Bridge, Ending Perilous River Crossings in Margibi

LOCAL NEWS

Lower Margibi – Ivar K. Jones, Representative for Margibi County Electoral District #2, on Saturday officially dedicated a newly constructed footpath bridge in Dolo Town.

Valued at approximately 9.7 million Liberian dollars (LD$) or US$53,602.44, the bridge was designed to end decades of perilous river crossings and prevent further loss of life.

The modern footbridge, built across a previously treacherous waterway, now safely connects residents of Dolo Town, Sam Town, and surrounding communities.

It provides secure passage for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and keh-keh riders—particularly schoolchildren and market traders who once risked their lives during daily commutes.

The project, part of Rep. Jones’ legislative initiative, was implemented by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE), with funding sourced from both the government and the lawmaker’s office.

According to a release from the House of Representatives, the Government of Liberia contributed US$37,000, while an additional US$16,602.44 came from Rep. Jones’ legislative allowance, underscoring his personal commitment to community development.

For years, the river in Dolo Town bore silent witness to human tragedy. Residents recounted harrowing stories of drowning incidents—particularly involving young students—during rainy seasons when the current became dangerously strong.

Many families lost children on their way to school, while others suffered injuries attempting to cross using makeshift rafts or by swimming.

“This bridge is not just infrastructure—it’s a memorial to those we’ve lost and a promise to protect those still with us,” said Rep. Jones during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, flanked by community members, traditional leaders, and government officials.

Amidst the excitement, Rep. Jones also addressed false claims circulating on social media regarding the project’s scope and cost. He emphasized that the construction strictly adhered to the approved blueprint and budget.

“This bridge belongs to you, the people,” he declared. “You were here during the groundbreaking, and you know what existed before.”

He officially handed over the completed bridge and its technical blueprint to the community, urging collective ownership and stewardship.
