MONROVIA – Mustapha Sheikh Kouyateh, Liberia’s Ambassador-at-Large and Special Presidential Envoy, has warned that the country could face political turmoil if President Joseph Boakai decides not to seek reelection in 2029.
Speaking on a local radio program, Kouyateh said he is committed to campaigning for the President’s second term, arguing that Boakai’s leadership offers Liberia a unique path forward.
“If the President decides not to contest in 2029 for any reason, Liberia will be plunged into chaos,” he cautioned.
The diplomat stressed that Boakai’s vision sets him apart from opposition figures eyeing the presidency. “The President’s vision is different from those who want to become President,” he said, adding that Boakai should continue initiatives already underway.
While President Boakai has not publicly declared his political plans, Kouyateh believes the 79-year-old leader is more energized now than he was during the 2023 elections. “The strength he has now, the motivation, and the energy he has now are greater than they were in 2023,” he remarked.
Kouyateh attributed the President’s renewed vigor to improvements in road connectivity, particularly in the Southeast, which he said has eased the burden of long-distance travel for many Liberians.
He further emphasized that Liberia’s resource wealth should be managed wisely to reduce reliance on institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF. “Liberia is a resource-rich nation and should not depend solely on external support,” he argued.
As the nation edges closer to another election season, Kouyateh’s comments highlight both the uncertainty surrounding Boakai’s political future and the growing debate about Liberia’s self-reliance and leadership direction.
