Barclayville – In preparation for World Drugs Day on June 26, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Grand Kru Detachment has donated food items to inmates at the Barclayville Police Station and stepped up public awareness efforts on the dangers of drug abuse.
The donation included five 25kg bags of rice, bottled water, soft drinks, and other essential food items.
Speaking to reporters in Grand Kru County during the donation on June 25, LDEA Commander Michael Gipply said the gesture was part of efforts to show compassion to inmates, regardless of the crimes they may have committed.
He added that the initiative also aims to educate detainees about the harmful effects of narcotic substances.
Receiving the items, Correction Officer Jacob Wright expressed gratitude to the LDEA, describing the donation as a “first-of-its-kind initiative” since his assignment in the county.
Officer Wright, who heads the Grand Kru County chapter of the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation, assured that the items would be used for their intended purpose. He also called on the LDEA to extend its support and awareness campaigns throughout the county.
Meanwhile, as part of its World Drugs Day observance, the LDEA has launched a comprehensive anti-drug awareness campaign across Barclayville. Officers visited schools, public areas, and private institutions—including the Jireh Solid Foundation School—to educate students and residents on the dangers of illicit drugs such as Kush, marijuana, cocaine, tramadol, and others.
During one of the outreach sessions, LDEA officers emphasized that while drug use may be a personal choice, its consequences are far-reaching and threaten both community safety and national development.
Students were encouraged to report suspected drug use to their instructors to help maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.
The Grand Kru LDEA’s initiatives are part of a broader nationwide effort to commemorate World Drugs Day 2025, which is focused on raising awareness, promoting prevention, and supporting rehabilitation in Liberia’s ongoing fight against drug abuse.
