ABUJA, NIGERIA The Liberian Delegation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament has called on the Liberian Senate to initiate a timely, impartial, and transparent investigation into recent allegations made against Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. The delegation emphasized that such an investigation, consistent with Senator Snowe’s own request, is necessary to uphold the integrity of Liberia’s democratic institutions.

In an official statement issued in Abuja, Nigeria, the Delegation reaffirmed its unwavering support for Senator Snowe, noting that he has consistently represented Liberia with professionalism, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to national and regional development. They highlighted his exemplary leadership within the ECOWAS Parliament, particularly in advancing Liberia’s interests on multiple fronts.

The Delegation outlined the following contributions of Senator Snowe:

Regional Representation: Senator Snowe has been a leading voice advocating for Liberia to host an ECOWAS institution following the withdrawal of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This initiative is expected to bolster regional integration and create employment opportunities for qualified Liberians.

Infrastructure Advocacy: He has actively championed infrastructure development support for Liberia within ECOWAS, reinforcing the country’s long-term development goals.

Peace and Security Leadership: As Chair of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Committee on Peace, Security, and the African Peer Review Mechanism, Senator Snowe has overseen notable progress in promoting peace, democratic governance, and institutional accountability throughout the West African region.

Champion of Regional Integration: He has consistently supported initiatives enhancing regional trade, free movement of people, and the empowerment of youth and women—efforts that continue to benefit Liberia directly.

“The Delegation is therefore deeply concerned about the possible ramifications of these allegations, not only on Senator Snowe’s personal and professional reputation, but also on Liberia’s broader image and credibility within the ECOWAS community,” the statement said.

The Delegation stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, due process, and the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. They urged that any investigations be conducted with the utmost integrity, in the spirit of national unity, and in adherence to democratic principles.

Despite the controversy, the Delegation reaffirmed its full confidence in Senator Snowe’s leadership and reiterated its commitment to faithfully representing Liberia’s best interests in the ECOWAS Parliament and other regional platforms.

The Delegation’s remarks follow a statement from Liberia’s Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism accusing Senator Edwin Snowe Jr.—Head of the Liberian Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament and Chair of its Committee on Peace, Security, and the African Peer Review Mechanism—of making “inflammatory and irresponsible remarks” aimed at undermining and destabilizing the Government of Liberia.

In a swift rebuttal, Senator Snowe categorically denied the allegations, accusing the government of a coordinated effort to tarnish his reputation and question his integrity as a statesman, elected official, and responsible member of the opposition.

“I wish to state, for the record, that at no point have I made any statement that could be interpreted as inciting panic, promoting instability, or threatening the democratic order of our country,” Snowe said. “Neither have I leveraged my networks within ECOWAS or other international organizations to orchestrate any actions against the Government of Liberia.”
