Private Vehicles with State Plates to Be Impounded; GSA Declares Enforcement

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA – The General Services Agency (GSA) has announced a nationwide enforcement campaign targeting the unauthorized use of government license plates on private vehicles, warning that offenders will face impoundment, fines, and other penalties as authorities move to reclaim state property.

Speaking Tuesday at the Ministry of Information in Monrovia, GSA Deputy Director General for Operations Robert Wilson said the agency has issued a formal directive for the immediate recovery of all government plates being used without official authorization.

Wilson emphasized that government license plates are strictly reserved for official state vehicles and must not be used for personal convenience. He said the agency is intensifying efforts to ensure that all illegally held plates are returned.

“Government plates are not for private convenience,” Wilson declared, urging individuals currently in possession of such plates to voluntarily surrender them before enforcement operations begin.

He explained that the crackdown forms part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability, protect government assets, and address revenue losses caused by the improper use of state-issued plates to bypass standard private vehicle registration procedures.

According to Wilson, any private vehicle found displaying unauthorized government plates will be impounded and transported to a designated government facility. Owners will be required to pay official fines and applicable fees before their vehicles are released.

However, the GSA clarified that certain government officials are legally authorized to use government plates on private vehicles for official assignments. Wilson noted that the agency maintains records to distinguish between authorized users and violators.

He further stated that officials who were previously issued government plates for private vehicles but have since been provided with official government vehicles are expected to return any additional plates still in their possession.

Wilson added that the enforcement exercise will cover all three branches of government—the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. He revealed that the GSA is currently engaging members of the Judiciary to ensure clear understanding ahead of full implementation within that sector.

Meanwhile, the agency is urging voluntary compliance, warning that full-scale street enforcement will commence if individuals fail to surrender unauthorized plates.
