Residents Forced to Use Unsafe Wells as Water Shortage Deepens in Gbanken

NATIONAL NEWS

GRAND KRU – Concerns are growing in Gbanken City, District #1, Grand Kru County, over a worsening shortage of safe drinking water, as local authorities warn of increasing public health risks.

By: Ahteenah Radio Staff Writer

Gbanken City Mayoress Esther Plee told Ahteenah Radiothat residents are currently relying on only two functional hand pumps to serve five residential zones, a situation she described as insufficient for the city’s growing population.

According to the Mayoress, at least four hand pumps have broken down and require urgent repairs, leaving many residents with no option but to depend on unsafe water sources, including unprotected wells, for their daily needs.

The shortage has raised fears of waterborne diseases, particularly among children and elderly residents, who are considered the most vulnerable.

Madam Plee is appealing to the Government of Liberia, humanitarian organizations, and development partners to urgently rehabilitate damaged water facilities and expand access to clean drinking water in the city.

She stressed that improving access to safe water is critical not only for basic service delivery but also for preventing disease outbreaks and safeguarding the health and well-being of residents.
